HAPTIC-NEXUS
A Tactile Approach to Art and Cognition
by Guido Dettoni, 2024

Definition of HAPTIC-NEXUS
HAPTIC-NEXUS refers to the connection between active touch and cognitive or emotional experiences and processes. Active touch involves manipulating objects or malleable materials through touch, primarily using hands.
Key Aspects
Creation Process: Participants create hand-sized objects, molded while experiencing cognitive or emotional processes.
Psychological Dimensions: The process can involve emotions and sentiments, awakening hidden memory zones (regressions), learning processes, sharing group objectives, decision-making, self-encounter (psycho-behavioral self-analysis), and self-recognition.
Evocative Objects: The resulting objects/sculptures evoke these processes, becoming their NEXUS when again in contact with the hands that created them.
Interpretation and Visualization
The interpretation and the interiorization of these objects are facilitated by observing sequences of their two-dimensional views, obtained through photographic processes or 3D scanning. The transition from 3D, tangible forms to 2D, visual representations, as well as the order of the sequence, reveals the information contained in the object and its nexus between active touch and cognitive or emotional experiences and processes.
Understanding the Term
“Haptics,” a term adopted by Katz, Revesz, and Gibson in the latter half of the 20th century, describes the sensory modality where active touch goes beyond the simple sum of tactile and kinesthetic sensations, including exploratory and intentional aspects. “Nexus” means a connection or link. Together, HAPTIC NEXUS can be interpreted as a “tactile connection” or “tactile bond.”
Potential Significance
While not yet an official term, HAPTIC-NEXUS may refer to:
- Neural pathways connecting tactile sensations to other sensory experiences or cognitive processes.
- The psychological association between touch and other sensory or emotional experiences.
- The process of integrating tactile information with other sensory inputs to create a cohesive perceptual experience.
Related Concepts
Although HAPTIC-NEXUS is not a formal term, established concepts in neuroscience and psychology relate to the integration of touch with other senses:
1. Multisensory integration: The process by which information from different sensory modalities is combined in the brain.
2. Cross-modal plasticity: The ability of the brain to reorganize itself to process sensory information from one modality using neural structures typically associated with another modality.
3. Haptic perception: The process of recognizing objects through touch, often involving the integration of tactile and proprioceptive information.
HAPTIC NEXUS is an evocative expression that could be used to describe the complex interconnections between touch and other sensory or cognitive processes.
